Materials and Resources

So now you have a little more information about your student. And now... you have to begin selecting books and activities that address needs and engage your student. Look through the materials section on Blackboard. Describe something you find that you think might be helpful to your situation.

  1. The resources in the materials folder were great! I hope to use many of them in my tutoring sessions as well as in my future classroom. Reading Lady had great downloadable things. The author studies were something I really liked. Reading Rockets had awesome teacher resources. That is a place that I would use now and in the future. My favorite resource was the leveled books page, that is something that I was going to ask for. My tutoring student is between stages and levels and that list will be a great resource for me to choose books that I hope will be at her level. Then as she progresses, I can check list and continue to give her books. The games seem to be fun for children, I need to take some more time and read all the directions and play a couple times before I allow my student to play them. Overall, I think those websites and materials will be great addition to help with writing our lesson plans in the next couple weeks.

  2. These resources look and seem very valuable for students and teachers. I especially liked the leveled books website. Before looking at this website, I basically just guessed what level the book was and went from there. Now I can choose a book that is on my student’s level and hopefully it will be more successful. I plan to use this website in the future to help guide my students to the appropriate leveled book that they are on. I also liked the Discovery Kids website and National Geographic Kids. These websites seem very interactive and engaging for students. I like how it has to do with reading, and yet the students can still have fun and play games or do activities at home or with friends. I think these websites motivate kids to want to read because the information is brought about in an interactive, friendly, and creative way.

  3. I loved the resources posted on Blackboard! My favorite sites were readinglady and Reading Rockets. I thought both of them had a lot of material that I can use for tutoring and in my future classroom. My favorite thing on the Reading Rockets page was the "First Year Teacher" guide. It had a whole bunch of topics on how to teach reading. It included a pre-test and post-test for teachers to take to see how well they know the topic. Then it provides information on how to teach that area of reading and ways to assess. I cannot wait to use that information to help me be a better reading teacher! On readinglady.com, I really enjoyed all of the Reader's Theatre that was available as well as all of the printable resources. Both of these are great sources and will be very beneficial to me in the classroom.

  4. I think that the links posted seem like resources that will definitely be helpful throughout the semester. The list of leveled books is exactly what I have been looking for to find books for Myasia. I also found the reading rockets website to be extremely beneficial, as it has specific ideas for what to do if your student is struggling in a specific area. I also think that the National Geographic and Discovery Kids websites could very well be extremely beneficial in lesson planning for a student that has a specific interest. Even just reading the directions on the puzzle game on the Discovery Kids website could be a literacy activity that I engage my student in. I will most definitely be coming back to these resources throughout the semester.

  5. I found it very helpful to have a resource to find leveled books. I have been going to the 3rd floor in TC to get the books I have been using for my student, but now I can find leveled books in any library if I need too. I also found Reading Rockets to be very beneficial because it has classroom strategies to use for any struggling reader. For my student I will most likely use the some of the fluency strategies as well as the phonics strategy. I also like the ReadingLady source, because it also had strategies that would benefit my student.

  6. I really like the materials posted on Blackboard. I feel they will be very helpful in tutoring my student. First off, I like the leveled reading stories. This will be very helpful to find a mix of book levels to give Riley. This will help me to challenge him and increase the level throughout the semester. The part that I feel will be most beneficial is in Reading Lady Resources. This site includes a section for reader's theatre. My student struggles with his fluency and he has a very outgoing personality. I want to work with him through reader's theatre to try and improve his fluency. There are many options for reader's theatre on that website that I am very excited to use!

  7. I thought the leveled books would be helpful. It is so difficult to know where to start when selecting books for tutoring. I just recently learned about reading rockets and what I have seen is really interesting. If you have any questions let me know.

  8. I found the resources to be very useful. I have a first grade student for tutoring. After testing my student, I discovered that she is at quite a low level. I will have to work on some very basic phonic skills with her to help her improve her reading. For this reason, I especially liked the reading rockets website. On there I found some good decoding and phonics activities that I would like to use during my time with my student. Since she is struggling to even read write now, our focus will be on teaching her decoding strategies to help improve her fluency. I also liked the leveled book website. I plan to take a look at some of these books. It is nice to have a list of books at each level.

  9. I will definitely use the website with the leveled book lists. I wasn’t sure how to tell what levels some books were and this site allows me to look up titles as well as find books from these lists. This will be helpful in my situation because my student is lower than first grade. This site has leveled books for all grades and has different levels in each grade. It will allow me to choose books at my student’s level and books that he will enjoy. The discovery kids website has some fun games that my student might enjoy. I may use some of them in my lessons. The activities might be fun to do as well. I think the reading rockets website will be helpful in my situation because it has a lot of activities and lessons to use with struggling readers.

  10. I think that the resources listed on Blackboard will be very valuable to us throughout our tutoring experience. Having these resources makes me feel more confident and comfortable about selecting appropriate books and activities for my student. I especially liked the leveled book lists, because I have been having difficulties choosing books that my student can successfully read. Now that I know the specific reading levels of certain books, I can use this information to better meet the needs of my student. I actually went to the library this weekend and found several of the books on these lists, so this resource has already proved to be beneficial for me.

Reading Rockets has numerous resources for teachers to provide help to struggling readers. Reading through several of the articles on this site gave me ideas about what strategies I can use to help my student build his skills in word recognition and comprehension. I found the “classroom strategies” section to be the most helpful, because it organizes specific strategies in a chart according to each skill (phonics, fluency, etc.) and tells whether it should be used before, during, and/or after reading. I will definitely use this chart as I create my lesson plans.

  11. I really like most of these sources. I especially like the National Geographic website. I know that my student really like bugs and dinosaurs. He is definitely all boy. I feel like between researching about different animals and allowing him to explore the site a little I can come up with some great activities for him to do to help in the comprehension.
I also really like the level reader website. It has a huge selection of grade appropriate books. It will definitely take the guess work out of figuring out what books to get for him. I definitely think that this website is going to be very valuable!
I also really like the Discovery Kids website. It has so many online games and activity ideas that I can use in my lessons! This makes it a little easier on making lesson plans.

  12. All the resources posted will help me as I tutor my autistic student. I really liked the Reading Rockets website. I have never been there, but I will continue to use the website as a resource. I particularly liked the themed book lists. My student loves animals, so the book lists will give me some more ideas about what books I can choose. I also think that the Discovery and National Geographic websites could be fun. She loves to look at animals and enjoys learning more about them.

  13. I really enjoyed the resources that were available in the materials section. My favorite resource that I looked through was the Reading Rockets website. I liked how it had sections for strategies to use in the classroom, how to identify struggling readers, and various other strategies were available. Also, I like the National Geographic website, I felt that it would be a great resource to use for topics that students may not normally be exposed to, and yet still be fun to learn about.

  14. The resources that were post were very interesting and helpful. I can use these resources in the future and now. I liked the article that contained leveled readers because i was having trouble with this the day trying to figure out what level my student could read. This list will also be helpful in the future in my classroom if needed. My student the other day asked if we could play a reading game online so having these resources will help me. In addition, i liked the website with the reading 101 article. It was interesting to read and will be helpful if i were to ever teach in a mild classroom. My student loves animals and art therefore, the resources will help me come up with fun activities for her to do.

  15. I think all the resources given will be helpful now and in the future. I especially liked the leveled book list because it will help me pick out books to read with my student. The activities on the Discovery Kids website looked like a lot of fun and I could use them if we had a few extra minutes after my lessons. I think that the resources on Reading Rockets and Reading Lady will be helpful as I start to work on increasing my students comprehension skills.

  16. I have a student that really needs help with fluency and comprehension. I love the "Reading Lady" website with tons of reader's theater scripts! There are a lot of classics, classics with a twist, and even some picture books (like Tacky the Penguin) adapted into scripts. I am working with a pretty outgoing kiddo, and I think he would really enjoy doing some reader's theater, and perhaps we could collaborate with another tutor and student to work on one! Is that allowed, Dr. Walker?

  17. I think that these resources will help out a great deal with ideas for my student. I know that she will love the games from Discover Kids. Also, I like that there are scripts for readers theater as well. These are all great websites for tutoring or for my future students.

  18. I found these resources very useful because I will not only use them during this semester to work with my student, but I will also use them in my future classroom. The leveled book list will be very helpful when looking for age and grade level appropriate books for students. I really like Emily's idea and if that is possible I would love to wor something out to have our students do that.

  19. I found the resources to be extremely beneficial. I specifically found the leveled books section to be helpful. I have been struggling to find books that will fit into Allison's reading level, and this will really help! I know she is somewhere in between a Kindergarten and First grade reading level, so this list will help me pick books from both lists to see what will work. I also really enjoyed the National Geographic page.

  20. I found a really good resource in the Reading Rockets website. My student seems to have a fairly subtle difficulty in fluency. It is not his speed of reading or the fact that he sounds choppy when he reads. His difficulty comes in the form on inflection in his oral reading. This website gave me a lot of information about what exactly fluency is and how to specifically help in different areas of fluency. It gave me several different strategies to use when trying to help with inflection as well as other areas in fluency. I will definitely be able to take back these strategies to the tutoring sessions and hopefully see some progress.

  22. I find these resources because I have a second grader that is very interested in cartoon type reading along with activities that have to do with interests he can relate too. I have been having trouble finding books that interest him along with being at an appropriate reading level. The reading rockets and level books resources will be very helpful in solving this problem. I think my student will find interest in the national geographic activities based on the information I gathered from him during the interest assessment.

  23. The leveled books was a great site to good a good idea of the type of books I need to be looking for for my student's level. The National Geographic site will surely be helpful, as my student is determined to learn about whales. I also found the ReadingRockets site to be awesome. It has a lot of great tips and links for just about everything. I really liked the fact that it offered different things in multiple languages, so this could be a site I could recommend to the parents/guardians of my ELLs.

  24. I think the leveled books page will be the most helpful for me. In my searches, I've had some trouble finding what books fit into the level I need. Book searches on Amazon give an estimated reading level, but I've noticed a few discrepancies in just the past couple weeks. I'm new to the leveled book realm, so seeing titles I know with a letter and grade level (with decimal points, no less - like 3.70) will help me get a better feel for where the things I already own fall on the continuum as well as future books I select for my tutoring sessions and later in my classroom.

  25. These materials are very helpful. It is amazing how many resources we can find on the internet that are out there to help us further engage and educate. I think my student will especially like the National Geographic Kids website because of the outdoor adventure topics. As far as the leveled reading books go this is also a very new topic to me so I found it interesting how in detail we can know our students and what level they are reading at. This would have been great information to know while I was student teaching with two non readers in the classroom. I think the leveled reading books will actually greatly help me in my lesson planning in the weeks to come.

  26. The many materials given under the materials list on blackboard were very beneficial. I am always wanting to learn and discover more creative ways of teaching and assessing in the classroom. Most of the items on the list were very new to me, however, I have currently this semester been using reading rockets in another class. When it comes to this class, however, like most have said, the leveled books will help the most. I am always struggling to figure out what level a book is at, as well as just trying to find ones. This will help tremendously during our weeks of tutoring.

  27. As I look through the materials I start with the leveled book lists. They seem to have a plethora of books to choose from, I only wish they said fiction or non-fiction. My student loves non-fiction books about animals but the titles of books can be misleading. This website does make it easy to find level reading books which is very helpful to me. Discovery Kids didn't open up on my browser so I am not sure what that is about. The National Geographic Kids looks awesome to go online and discover with students even on a smart board. There are lots of pictures and fun facts about animals. Reading Rockets website seemed very helpful for teachers, especially new teachers like myself. There is so much information on RTI, Special Ed, Reading, Information, and frequently asked questions. This seems like a good resource to find lesson plan ideas and learn new information. Wow the Reading Lady has so many lesson ideas and reading strategies. I was very impressed and excited when seeing this. She had many great ideas and I hope to use some of them in my lesson plans!
